Other musicians who appeared at the event included THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN’s Greg Puciato, LINKIN PARK’s Mike Shinoda, XZIBIT and CYPRESS HILL.

Chi has been in a semi-conscious state since being involved in a horrific accident in November 2008, and his family has accumulated an overwhelming amount of medical bills that insurance does not entirely cover. It was DEFTONES’ mission to raise significant funds to help ensure Chi’s recovery by playing two very special benefit shows in Hollywood on November 19 and November 20, and also by launching a benefit auction in conjunction with CharityBuzz.com.

The auction featured special items generously donated by an array of DEFTONES’ friends, including METALLICA, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, BLINK 182, HIM, SLAYER and many more.

HardTimes.ca conducted an interview with guitarist and primary songwriter Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson of Swedish black metallers MARDUK after the band’s November 21, 2009 performance in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Watch the chat above.

“Wormwood”, the eleventh album from MARDUK, sold around 650 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD landed at position No. 99 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

“Wormwood” was released in the U.S. on October 13 via Regain Records (September 24 in Europe). The CD was recorded at Endarker Studios in Norrköping, Sweden with engineer/producer Magnus Devo Andersson.

Following three very special U.S. appearances in August in Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York (effectively breaking their streak of visa issues), MARDUK is now back in North America as part of a headlining tour with NACHTMYSTIUM, MANTIC RITUAL, MERRIMACK and BLACK ANVIL (on select dates). Dubbed U.S. Plague Tour 2009, the trek kicked off on November 20 at the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts and will run for 21 more dates before coming to a close in New York City on December 16 at the Gramercy Theater, where the band recently played to an overwhelming crowd response.

FEAR FACTORY — the newly revamped band featuring original FF members Dino Cazares (guitar) and Burton C. Bell (vocals) alongside bassist Byron Stroud (who was credited on the last two FEAR FACTORY albums in addition to touring and recording with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and ZIMMERS HOLE) and legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (DETHKLOK, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DEATH, TESTAMENT) — made its live debut last night (Friday, December 4) at Espaço Lux in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be viewed below. A handful of dates in Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico are also scheduled to take place later this month.

FEAR FACTORY will embark on a four-date U.K. tour in February.

The dates are as follows:

The CD, which was co-produced by the band with Rhys Fulber (FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, PARADISE LOST), was recently mixed by Greg Reely (PARADISE LOST, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, SKINNY PUPPY).

By placing the ’story’ into a futuristic, fictional narrative, the words and ideas may not have seemed threatening. Not so for ‘Mechanize’. These are the words of a reality that once seemed distant, that are now apparently, and evidently real. These are the words of the world in which we live; for what once seemed like a story of another time, has come to be our reality today. Welcome to the world of ‘Mechanize’.”

Regarding “Mechanize”’s musical direction, Bell told Sergio Alvite of Mexico’s Search & Destroy, “It has the raw aggression of what ‘Soul Of A New Machine’ [1992] was but it has… I would say it has the maturity of ‘Obsolete’ [1998]. When I say ‘maturity,’ I mean that it has the songwriting skills that ‘Soul Of A New Machine’ did not have whereas ‘Obsolete’ did.”

HELP MEND A HEART – NEW FOUND GLORY NEWS.

New Found Glory vocalist Jordan Pundik, his family and most importantly, his mother, are the subject of a new report on the Huffington Post. As the health care debate continues to rage in the United States, Pundik’s mother, Maureen, had an infection that was severely weakening her heart and left it with only 10 percent of its functionality.

Doctors have told Waters’ family that a heart transplant will save her life, but the expensive procedure may be out of range, as she was recently laid off from her job at a mortgage company and no longer has health insurance. The family is trying to raise money through donations to pay for the expensive and live saving procedure. They have launched a website, helpmendaheart.com and have currently raised more than $25,000.

MACHINE HEAD – PANTERA COVER.

San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD performed their cover version of the PANTERA classic “Fucking Hostile” live for the first time on December 2, 2009 in Dallas, Texas. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be viewed above.

Commented MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn: “That was fun. [It was the] first time we ever played it live and probably the fourth or fifth time we even jammed it as a band (we recorded [it] separately [for the upcoming Dimebag tribute album]).”

MACHINE HEAD’s studio recording of “Fucking Hostile” will appear on the forthcoming “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) tribute album, which will be released on the cover of the 200th issue of U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine. The CD and the magazine, which will coincide with the five-year anniversary of Dimebag’s passing, will be made available on December 16.

The “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott tribute album will include the following artists/cuts:

Flynn told Metal Hammer about the band’s decision to cover “Fucking Hostile”, “It was either that or ‘Strength Beyond Strength’ from ‘Far Beyond Driven’. In the end, we decided that we wanted to do a classic. We chose ‘Fucking Hostile’ because it’s two and a half minutes of pure, raging metal. It’s short, fast and brutal.”

He continued, “There’s some real intricate riffing parts in there. We’d jammed it before but we’d never sat down and analyzed it properly. I think we did a great job on it.”

“Dimebag” Darrell Abbott was co-founder and lead guitarist for PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul formed DAMAGEPLAN. On Dec. 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. He was 38 years old.

SMASHING PUMPKINS – NEW SONG – UP NOW.

Billy Corgan has released the first song from his ambitious 44-song Smashing Pumpkins release. As he explained previously, the album will be titled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope and is expected to feature 44 songs with each song made available for free, to anyone anywhere.

The band’s model for the record is to sell highly limited edition EPs (of four songs each times 11). Corgan promises that the EPs will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal CD single. When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale.

Hardcore act Burning Empires which features Stuart Ross, Kyle Johnson and Ryan Morgan of Misery Signals, Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy and vocalist Matt Mixon, have posted another new song.

Drummer Andy Hurley explained the band to Spin:

This is a band I’ve always wanted to do with these guys, who have been best friends for about as long as Pete [Wentz] has been my best friend — over 10 years. Burning Empires satisfies a heavier, more pissed off side of me that has been waiting to come out, and the politics of the band are so important to me. They’re issues for which I’ve wanted to have a musical outlet for years.

COHEED & CAMBRIA – YEAR OF THE BLACK RAINBOW.

Coheed and Cambria have officially announced their next album, having wrapped up tracking last week. The album will be titled Year of the Black Rainbow and is set for release in April 2010 and will be followed by a headline tour of the US, and then on to Europe and the UK for festivals.

The band goes on to explain that the new album will be the “Origin Story” or “The Prequel,” and likely the final story of the ongoing concept story of “The Amory Wars” which has continued through the bands entire discography. Not only is the band planning the record, but a deluxe edition will include a 300+ page novel which will tell the origins of characters and other details in the band’s epic.

The band goes on to note that the record is being produced by Atticus Ross and Joe Baressi and the novel will be written by frontman Claudio Sanchez and author Peter David.

UNDEROATH – TRANSPORT VAN ACCIDENT.

Underoath had to cancel a show in Omaha, Nebraska earlier this week following an accident involving a van transporting their gear.

The band has issued the following:

“Our van carrying all our gear got into a very bad accident. The driver has some injuries, but is stable. However, there is no possible way we can make the show tonight. Please pray for our friend Zack that was driving.”

The first downloadable SLIPKNOT pack for Rock Band will be released next week. It will feature three songs — “Psychosocial”, “Duality” and “Sulfur”.

Individual tracks are available for only $1.99 or you can get the whole pack for $5.49.

The tracks will become available for download starting December 8 on Xbox 360 and Wii and December 10 on Playstation 3.
